Starting a vegetable garden may seem daunting for some people, or perhaps some people believe that having a vegetable garden may become too time-consuming and therefore forget about the idea completely. Here are just some of the positive reasons for you to start your own vegetable garden.

Taste

When you grow your own vegetables you will defiantly take the time to truly cherish the flavour of your produce, because of the time and effort into producing it. Most people tend to naturally shovel down their potatoes as filler with a meal but rarely take the time to taste them. Homegrown will have you seeking different potato flavors!

Flavour

Most supermarket vegetables have been specially produced and prepared for shelf life, appearance and transportability, that often means that you won’t get the true flavour of the produce that you would be growing in your garden. Supermarket tomatoes, for example, are nowhere near as flavourful as homegrown. While strawberries grow like crazy, it is impossible for them to grow wrong and tastes way better, and easier to look after than cacti.
Variety: While the supermarket can be convenient, there are many types of vegetables that simply can’t be sold in a store, as they are harder to keep in good condition. For example, leafy greens, swiss chard, turnip greens, kai lan etc start to wither as soon as they are cut, so naturally, they don’t present well on the shelves. Other than being delicious they are obviously very good for you. There are so many different vegetables to try that you can’t purchase in the supermarket, so growing them yourself is sometimes the only option.

Price

While some things cost a lot in the store, even though they are quite cheap to produce. Asparagus, for example, is expensive because it tends to more labor-intensive than most vegetables. While most people could find a local farmer to buy them from, it may be for sale in larger quantities only, making it next to impossible to buy for your own use. Situations like this make it more sensible to grow them in your own vegetable garden. You only have to plant it once and harvest it for the next 15 years! Artichokes are in the same category. Lettuces, arugula, mizuna, etc, are very expensive to buy, but grows like weeds and reseeds themselves a lot of the time, which is a huge bonus. Herbs are another example, while they’re expensive to buy, they are also almost impossible to kill once properly established in the garden, growing for free and will make your food taste better.
